France Triumphs Over Norway 4-1 in World Cup Match, Coach Stephan Reflects on Team's Performance
France's Impressive Victory Against Norway
Massachusetts [US], June 27: Guy Stephan, the assistant coach for France, dedicated the team's impressive 4-1 victory over Norway to head coach Didier Deschamps, expressing his thoughts were with him and that he planned to reach out later.
Stephan shared his relief that Deschamps is anticipated to rejoin the team soon, with plans to participate in training the following day. Ousmane Dembele's remarkable hat-trick propelled France to a decisive win in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match held in Boston on Friday.
He commended the players for their performance, stating they met expectations and emphasized that the squad, due to their strong connection with Deschamps, was driven to deliver a solid performance in his absence.
“Naturally, my thoughts are with Didier Deschamps. I will contact him later. We are all pleased that he will be back with the team shortly. He will join training tomorrow afternoon,” Stephan informed reporters.
“The players executed their roles effectively,” he added. “Given their close relationship with Didier, they aimed to achieve something special on the field today.”
Both teams had already secured their spots in the knockout stages after winning their initial two matches. France led the group on goal difference before this match and needed only a draw to secure first place.
However, they concluded the group stage with a resounding victory, confirming their top position in Group I.
Stephan acknowledged that while the overall performance was commendable, he was concerned about moments when the team eased off and lowered their intensity, allowing the opposition to create scoring opportunities.
He noted that this is an area requiring improvement as they face tougher opponents ahead, mentioning that Norway was not at full strength during the match.
“What I found less satisfactory, if I may be a bit of a perfectionist, is that there were instances when things became too easy, and we didn’t exert ourselves as much, leading to situations where we granted chances to our opponents,” he remarked.
“This is something we need to address as the competition will intensify. I’m not implying that Norway isn’t a quality team, but they didn’t field their strongest lineup today,” he concluded.
Notably, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, and Alexander Sorloth were absent for Norway in their final group stage encounter against France.
The decision to rest these key players was made by coach Solbakken, who opted to conserve players ahead of the Round of 32.
