France Aims for Glory Against Senegal in FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener
France Prepares for World Cup Clash with Senegal
New Jersey [France], June 16 (Media House): Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France, has downplayed any notions of seeking revenge as his team gears up for their FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Senegal. This encounter is particularly significant as Senegal handed France a narrow 1-0 defeat 24 years ago, leading to France's unexpected exit in the group stage during the 2002 tournament, where they were the defending champions.
Under the leadership of Kylian Mbappe, France is set to pursue their third star on the World Cup trophy when they face Senegal in New Jersey on Wednesday. Senegal reached the round of 16 in the last World Cup held in Qatar and previously made it to the quarterfinals in 2002. Deschamps emphasized that there is no concept of revenge in football, noting that most players on the current squad were not even born during that fateful match.
Deschamps remarked to the media, “This is history, but even (midfielder) N’Golo (Kante) may not have seen that game. Almost all my players were born after 2002. I understand the fascination with the term 'revenge', but it doesn’t exist in football.”
The 2018 World Cup champions, who were runners-up to Argentina led by Lionel Messi in the 2022 tournament, will face intense scrutiny in New Jersey. Their captain, Kylian Mbappe, has been under fire from analysts despite his consistent performances with Real Madrid, particularly after failing to score in warm-up matches against the Ivory Coast and Northern Ireland.
Deschamps acknowledged Senegal's strength, stating, “They have outstanding players who compete at top clubs. Their offensive capabilities and midfield strength are impressive. When you are part of the elite teams, you possess all the necessary qualities.”
N’Golo Kante, a vital member of France's 2018 World Cup-winning team, returns after missing the last tournament due to injury. He anticipates a challenging midfield battle against Senegal.
“We aim to be a cohesive unit, and every player is crucial. Trust in our team is essential. We must strive to advance as far as possible in this competition... Our primary opponent is ourselves. Staying united and focused is key,” Kante concluded.
