Balogun's Mixed Emotions on World Cup Comeback

New York [US], July 14: Folarin Balogun, the striker for the United States, expressed his initial joy at rejoining the squad for their Round of 16 match against Belgium in the FIFA World Cup. However, he quickly recognized that his return would stir considerable controversy due to a suspension stemming from a red card.

The U.S. team's journey in the tournament came to an end with their defeat against Belgium, marking them as the final co-hosts to exit the competition, following the eliminations of Canada and Mexico.

Balogun's participation was mired in controversy after FIFA lifted the one-match suspension he received for a red card during the U.S.'s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Despite Belgium's challenge against this decision, FIFA upheld Balogun's eligibility for the match.

He acknowledged that the surrounding distractions were challenging to manage and impacted the team's morale. Nevertheless, he aimed to concentrate on the game as much as possible. Balogun emphasized that the circumstances were beyond his control, which ultimately bolstered his confidence.

“Initially, I was thrilled to be back with the team, but upon reflection, I realized it would spark a lot of debate. I could sense some nerves among my teammates due to the unusual situation. As the game approached, I focused on my performance, but it was tough to ignore the external noise,” Balogun shared, as reported by a media outlet.

“It was an unfortunate situation that I couldn't alter, yet it gave me a sense of confidence,” he concluded.
