Historic IPL Debut for Finn Allen

Finn Allen made a remarkable debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 2, 2026, during the Indian Premier League (IPL). In just his second match for KKR, having been acquired for ₹2 crores during the IPL mini auction in Abu Dhabi, the New Zealand opener scored 28 runs off just seven balls, including an explosive 24 runs in the first over bowled by David Payne. This stellar performance provided KKR with a strong start as they aimed to chase a daunting target of 227 runs. However, Allen could not replicate his previous performance from the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa, where he had scored a century off 33 balls. He was dismissed by left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey on the third ball of the second over after his quickfire innings.

Finn Allen's Record-Breaking Performance

Allen's innings featured four boundaries and two sixes, achieving a strike rate of 400. This marks the first time an opening batsman has recorded a strike rate of 400 or more after facing at least two balls in an innings. He surpassed the previous record held by Abhishek Sharma, with notable players like Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle also in the top five for this statistic.

Highest Strike Rate by an IPL Opener (Minimum 2 Balls Faced)

Player SR Runs Balls Faced Team Opponent Year
Finn Allen 400 27 7 KKR SRH 2026
Abhishek Sharma 383.33 46 12 SRH DC 2024
Virat Kohli 357.14 25 7 RCB RR 2019
Chris Gayle 350 35 10 RCB SRH 2015
Phil Salt 342.85 48 14 KKR RCB 2024

Robin Uthappa is the only other opener to achieve a strike rate of 400, but he only faced one ball (scoring 4 runs) before being stumped. Among all players with a strike rate exceeding 400, Allen's score of 27 is tied for the second-highest alongside Albie Morkel (28 off 7 for CSK against RCB in 2012), with Chris Morris (38 off 7 for DC against RPSG) leading the list. Additionally, Allen's 24 runs in the first over is the highest by an overseas player, surpassing Sunil Narine's previous record of 21. Overall, it ranks as the joint-second highest, with only Yashasvi Jaiswal (26 runs) ahead of him.
