Match Suspension Due to Weather Conditions

Philadelphia, USA - June 23: The Group I match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 between France and Iraq has been halted due to heavy rainfall and lightning in the Philadelphia region, as reported on the FIFA website.

The encounter, taking place at Philadelphia Stadium, had reached the half-time mark when deteriorating weather conditions prompted a delay of at least 30 minutes for the second half.

According to FIFA's announcement, the match was suspended due to the hazardous weather and the potential risk of lightning, with play set to resume only when conditions are deemed safe.

"In light of the adverse weather in Philadelphia, including lightning risks near the stadium, the FIFA World Cup match between France and Iraq has been suspended. A 30-minute pause has been declared. FIFA will adhere to the safety protocols outlined by local authorities, and the match will continue as soon as it is safe. The safety and security of everyone involved is FIFA's top priority. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all fans," stated the FIFA website.

At the time of the interruption, France was leading 1-0, with captain Kylian Mbappe netting the only goal.

Mbappe scored in the 14th minute, marking his 15th World Cup goal during his 100th international appearance for France. The goal originated from a play down the right side, where he collaborated with winger Michael Olise. After an initial pass was blocked, Olise regained possession and set up Mbappe at the edge of the penalty area.

The French captain then unleashed a powerful left-footed shot. Although Iraq's goalkeeper, Ahmed Basil, managed to touch the ball, he could not prevent it from entering the net.

This goal allowed Mbappe to equal Brazil's Ronaldo, becoming the joint third-highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
