FIFA President's Strong Stance Against Racism

On July 7, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his firm disapproval of the racist comments aimed at French football captain Kylian Mbappe by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla. Infantino emphasized the sport's dedication to fighting racism and promoting inclusivity.

In a message shared on his Instagram Story, Infantino highlighted how football has the ability to unite individuals during the ongoing FIFA World Cup, asserting that racism has no place in either the sport or society.

He stated, "Football has shown during this FIFA World Cup how it is such a powerful unifier in society – our sport must remain an inclusive and safe space for all, and our efforts continue in order to kick the scourge of racism out from our beautiful game and society."

In another post, Infantino condemned Amarilla's remarks and expressed his support for Mbappe, saying, "I unequivocally condemn the racist remarks made against Kylian Mbappe by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla. The entire football world and society stand in solidarity with the France captain: we must fight racism and defeat it together."

Reiterating FIFA's commitment to anti-racism, he added, "Throughout this FIFA World Cup, football has demonstrated what a powerful force for unity it is in our lives. Our sport must remain an inclusive and safe space for everyone, and we will continue our efforts to eradicate the scourge of racism from our beautiful game and from society."

French President Emmanuel Macron also voiced his support for Mbappe, commending him for standing up against Amarilla's controversial comments. Macron remarked, "Another goal for Kylian Mbappe. Against racism this time. All my support. When words defile, our values respond: dignity, respect, fraternity."

Un but de plus pour Kylian Mbappé. Contre le racisme cette fois. Tout mon soutien. Quand les mots salissent, nos valeurs répondent : dignité, respect, fraternité. @KMbappe

The controversy arose after Amarilla referred to Mbappe as a "colonised Cameroonian" and made derogatory remarks about his performance and character. In response, Mbappe labeled her comments as those of a "despicable woman" unworthy of her position.

The Paraguayan government also released a statement condemning Amarilla's remarks, asserting that they contradict the values of respect and peaceful coexistence that Paraguay promotes. They clarified that her statements reflect her individual views and do not represent the government's stance.
