FIFA President Commends Iran's Resilience in World Cup 2026
Praise for Iran's Performance
In a recent statement, FIFA President Gianni Infantino lauded Iran for their impressive performance in a challenging World Cup group, highlighting their exceptional quality, teamwork, and unwavering spirit throughout the tournament.
Despite not advancing to the knockout stage, Infantino expressed gratitude to the players for their heartfelt efforts, which brought pride to their supporters.
Iran's journey in the FIFA World Cup 2026 saw them finish with three draws in the group stage, ultimately placing third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, thus missing out on qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
Infantino shared his thoughts on Instagram, stating, "Remaining unbeaten through a challenging @fifaworldcup group stage is a remarkable feat that proved your exceptional quality and teamwork to the world. Unfortunately, it was not enough to progress, but your passion and desire was there for all to see. Thank you for playing with such heart and for giving everyone so much to be proud of."
Iran's Group Stage Matches
Iran's participation in the tournament faced uncertainty for months, particularly after airstrikes by the United States and Israel in February.
In their final group match against Egypt, Mahmoud Sabre opened the scoring after a rebound from Mohamed Salah's shot, but Ramin Rezaeian equalized for Iran after Mehdi Taremi's penalty was saved by Mostafa Shobeir.
Rezaeian was awarded Player of the Match, but Iran's hopes for a late victory were dashed when a stoppage-time goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.
