Fakhar Zaman Faces Potential Suspension for Alleged Ball Tampering in PSL
Fakhar Zaman's Controversial Incident
Fakhar Zaman may be facing a one-match suspension from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to accusations of ball tampering. He has been found guilty of a Level 3 violation under Article 2.14 of the PCB Code of Conduct, which pertains to actions that alter the condition of the ball, specifically breaching Article 41.3 of the playing conditions. This incident occurred during the final over of a match when Karachi required 14 runs. While Fakhar, along with teammates Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, was in conversation, umpires observed him pressing the ball in a manner that deviated from the standard shining technique. Following an inspection, the umpires opted for a new ball and imposed a five-run penalty on Lahore Qalandars. A formal hearing is scheduled for Fakhar, after which match referee Roshan Mahanama will deliver a ruling.
Additionally, a report from Cricbuzz has raised alarming allegations suggesting that this incident may not be an isolated occurrence for Fakhar Zaman, hinting at a pattern of behavior. During a T20 World Cup 2024 match against the USA, he was involved in a similar situation. At that time, the USA was in a strong position, needing 56 runs off 42 balls with nine wickets remaining. After Shaheen Afridi was hit for a six, Fakhar reportedly tucked the ball under his shirt, causing concern among the USA players. He seemed to hold the ball with both hands for an extended period, which led to a noticeable reverse swing in subsequent overs. Although Pakistan managed to tie the game, the USA ultimately triumphed in the Super Over. The USA team raised their concerns with the fourth umpire, Rod Tucker, and captain Monank Patel documented the incident in his report, verbally addressing it with match referee Jeff Crowe. However, no formal charges were filed, and the complaint remained confidential. Cricbuzz reached out to the ICC for comments but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
While Fakhar has not yet been conclusively proven guilty of ball tampering, the recurrence of such incidents involving the same players raises significant concerns, particularly as both occurred under pressure for the fielding side.
