SA20 Season 5 Auction Overview

Johannesburg [South Africa], October 8: The player auction for SA20 Season 5 showcased a thrilling mix of established international stars and promising young talent as the four franchises finalized their rosters on Wednesday evening in Johannesburg.

Among the standout signings was former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis, who attracted significant attention before being acquired by Joburg Super Kings for $162,286 USD, marking one of the day's top purchases.

The 42-year-old was at the center of a competitive bidding war between Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town but ultimately returned to the Wanderers, where he has played for the last four seasons of SA20.

Joining him at the Bullring is West Indies T20 legend Kieron Pollard, who was signed by Joburg Super Kings for $90,162 USD. Pollard, the all-time leading run-scorer in men's T20 cricket, will bring his exceptional power-hitting and experience to the team.

MI Cape Town made significant investments as well, securing Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for $156,274 USD and adding West Indies hitter Shimron Hetmyer for $90,162 USD.

Rassie van der Dussen, a former Proteas top-order batter, will continue with the Pretoria Capitals after being signed for $30,053 USD, providing stability to their batting lineup as they aim to improve after finishing as runners-up last season.

To bolster their chances, the Capitals also acquired Proteas Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma, who is returning for his third stint in SA20 after helping the Sunrisers Eastern Cape clinch two championships.

While seasoned players dominated the headlines, the auction's most dramatic moment came from 18-year-old Jason Rowles. The highly regarded Under-23 talent sparked an intense bidding war between MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings, with both franchises recognizing his potential.

Ultimately, Joburg Super Kings secured Rowles for $174,248 USD, making him the standout acquisition of the auction. This fierce competition for Rowles highlights the increasing value placed on emerging South African talent within the SA20 framework.

Rowles, a recent graduate from St David's Marist Inanda and a participant in the rain Schools SA20, represents a significant investment in the future of the league.

SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith remarked that the auction showcased the league's combination of world-class players and emerging South African talent. He noted, "This year’s auction demonstrated what SA20 has evolved into, a platform where elite players like Faf du Plessis and Shimron Hetmyer coexist with South Africa’s brightest young prospects. Jason Rowles was the highlight for me, as his bidding battle illustrates the franchises' belief in the next generation. Just last year, he was competing in the Final of the rain Schools SA20, and now he joins a squad filled with some of the world’s best T20 players. This is the pathway we aimed to create, and it’s encouraging to see it in action," he added.

Three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape demonstrated their strategic acumen by completing their 19-player squad with the addition of Proteas left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and England all-rounder Craig Overton, enhancing their already formidable pace attack.

MI Cape Town also bolstered their bowling lineup with the return of New Zealand fast-bowling star Trent Boult and 21-year-old Oliver Whitehead, while the league's global appeal extended to the USA and Zimbabwe with Joburg Super Kings acquiring Andries Gous and Blessing Muzarabani.

Smith expressed satisfaction with the number of Proteas players selected, stating, "A strong league and a robust national team are interconnected, and today was a testament to that."

SA20 Season 5 is set to kick off on January 17, 2027, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape facing off against Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, a rematch of last season’s final.
