Erling Haaland Shines in FIFA World Cup Debut with Two Goals Against Iraq
Haaland's Impactful Debut
In Massachusetts on June 17, Manchester City’s star forward Erling Haaland made a remarkable debut in the FIFA World Cup, scoring two goals as Norway triumphed over Iraq with a score of 4-1. Despite Iraq's spirited effort, Norway showcased their strength.
Haaland's two goals, along with a strike from Leo Ostigard and an own goal by Hussein, propelled Norway to victory, allowing them to join France at the top of Group I with three points after the first matchday.
This win positioned Norway at the top of their group, while France, who earlier defeated Senegal 3-1, found themselves in second place.
Iraq began the match with enthusiasm, creating several early opportunities. Aymen Hussein missed a close-range header, and Ali Al Hamadi's long-range shot went over the bar.
Norway took the lead in the 29th minute when Haaland capitalized on a low cross from David Moller Wolfe, finishing expertly at the back post.
Iraq responded ten minutes later, with Hussein scoring a powerful header from Amir Al Ammari’s cross. However, Norway regained the lead just before halftime when Haaland pressured goalkeeper Jalal Hassan into a mistake, resulting in a goal.
Despite Iraq's attempts to equalize before the break, Norway maintained their lead.
The second half saw fewer clear chances, but Norway increased their advantage in the 76th minute when Ostigard scored from a corner following an effort from Kristian Thorstvedt.
Haaland nearly secured a hat-trick late in the game after intercepting a poor back pass, but Hassan was quick to deny him. Nevertheless, Haaland contributed to the final goal, leading to an own goal by Hussein deep into stoppage time.
