England's Road to the Knockout Stage

Atlanta [US], July 2: England's manager, Thomas Tuchel, is gearing up for an exciting Round of 16 match against co-hosts Mexico at the legendary Azteca Stadium. He acknowledged that the high altitude will present significant challenges after his team narrowly defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 on Wednesday.

Harry Kane's late goals saved England from a potential upset, as DR Congo initially took the lead with Brian Cipenga's early goal. This comeback victory secured England's spot in the knockout stage, where they will face Mexico in a highly anticipated match.

Tuchel expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming fixture, stating, "It is perhaps one of the most thrilling matchups to play against Mexico at the Azteca."

He also highlighted the difficulties posed by the altitude, noting, "We cannot physically adapt to it in just four days; it's simply impossible."

A Challenging Match Against DR Congo

England faced a tough challenge as DR Congo stunned them with an early goal just seven minutes into the match. Cipenga found himself unmarked at the back post to score from a low cross, giving the African team a dream start in their first-ever World Cup knockout match.

Despite controlling possession, England struggled to penetrate a well-organized Congolese defense in the first half. Jude Bellingham received a yellow card for a late tackle, while goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made several crucial saves to maintain DR Congo's lead at halftime.

However, Tuchel remained confident in his team's resolve, stating, "This team did not accept defeat as an option." He expressed pride in their determination, saying, "They showed up when it mattered, and we earned the win. We don’t give in; that’s the essence of this team."

Tuchel's Tactical Adjustments Pay Off

Tuchel acknowledged that the slow start complicated the match but insisted that England was the superior side after conceding early. He remarked, "The halftime score didn’t reflect the game fairly. We made things harder for ourselves by conceding so early."

He noted that the team improved their attacking play in the second half, stating, "We kept pushing, and the goalkeeper made incredible saves."

The manager's substitutions, including Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka, proved crucial as England ramped up the pressure. The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Kane scored from close range, followed by another goal in the 86th minute, sealing the victory and advancing England to the Round of 16.

Looking Ahead to the Match Against Mexico

Reflecting on the comeback, Tuchel praised his players' composure in the final moments, saying, "They played without fear and with determination. In knockout matches, you must find a way to win, and we did just that."

As the team prepares for their next challenge, Tuchel encouraged young England fans to stay up late to support their team, saying, "Write an excuse for school and let them watch football. The World Cup happens every four years, and we need everyone's support, especially from the kids."
