Manchester [UK], September 19: In a thrilling conclusion to the T20I series, Jos Buttler delivered an outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 62 runs off just 32 balls. England successfully chased down a target of 125 runs in a mere 9.4 overs, defeating Sri Lanka by eight wickets during the third T20I at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Sri Lanka struggled throughout their innings, being bowled out for 124 runs in 18.5 overs. England's bowlers showcased their skills, with Sonny Baker, Jofra Archer, and Will Jacks each claiming two wickets, as reported by a sports media outlet.

This emphatic victory allowed England to reclaim the top position in the ICC men's T20I rankings from India, while Sri Lanka faced their 15th consecutive defeat against England in this format.

Buttler and Harry Brook initiated a swift response for England, forming an impressive partnership of 85 runs off just 39 balls. By the end of the powerplay, England had raced to 82 for one, leaving little doubt about the match's outcome.

Brook contributed 26 runs before being run out, while Buttler continued his dominance, sealing the match with a six over square leg. This performance followed his milestone of reaching 15,000 T20 runs in the previous match of the series.

Aneurin Donald was the only other England player dismissed, stumped off Tharindu Ratnayake, as the hosts completed their chase with 62 balls remaining.

Earlier, Sri Lanka found it challenging to form partnerships under the pressure of England's disciplined bowling attack. Pathum Nissanka provided a brief spark with 36 runs off 24 balls, while Kamindu Mendis added 35 runs off 28 deliveries.

However, regular wickets fell around them, preventing Sri Lanka from setting a competitive score. Their total of 124 marked the lowest first-innings T20I score at Old Trafford since 2018.

Baker, who was awarded Player of the Match, recorded impressive figures of two wickets for 17 runs in 3.5 overs, continuing his strong start in T20I cricket. He concluded the series with six wickets at an economy rate of 6.58.

Archer and Jacks also contributed with two wickets each, while Liam Dawson and Jamie Overton took one wicket each. Only Adil Rashid failed to take a wicket among England's bowlers.

Nissanka and Mendis were the only Sri Lankan batsmen to show some resistance, as England's bowlers effectively restricted scoring and took wickets at regular intervals.

Captain Charith Asalanka's struggles were evident, as he scored 16, 31, and 10 in the three matches, raising concerns about Sri Lanka's T20I performance.

England's series victory highlighted the contributions from both seasoned players and emerging talents, with Baker's performances adding depth to their fast-bowling lineup.
