Emerging Star Diya Mattipati Triumphs at Junior Pickleball Championship
Diya Mattipati's Remarkable Journey
In a sport that is still establishing its presence in India, new talents can rise to prominence in a flash. At the recently held Junior Pickleball Championship in Ahmedabad, Diya Mattipati from Telangana made headlines by winning the Under-18 Girls Singles title, surprising many.
Prior to this event, Diya had limited experience, having exited in the first round of the Indian Open earlier in April. However, she defied expectations by defeating notable players like Anushka Chhabria, Naomi Amalsadiwala, and Ashritha Raju to secure the championship.
Initially, few believed Diya had a chance, especially since she had only started playing pickleball five months prior. Yet, her journey was nothing short of extraordinary, culminating in an unexpected victory.
She began her tournament with a decisive 21-8 win against Swaina Kataria and then shocked silver medalist Naomi Amalsadiwala with a 21-14 semifinal victory. Meanwhile, Ashritha Raju upset the favorite Anushka Chhabria, setting the stage for an unexpected final.
In the championship match, Diya relied on her tennis background, showcasing her volleying skills and quick transitions to narrowly defeat Ashritha 21-17 in a tightly contested match. "No one expected me to win. I was just a random player there. But after my victory, everyone appreciated my performance," Diya shared.
She acknowledged the challenges of competing in singles, having primarily played doubles in local leagues. Despite this, she also reached the semifinals in the U18 Girls Doubles event, where she and Swaina were defeated by Ruvanashri SK and Aashrithaa S.
Aiming for the Pickleball World Cup
While her doubles journey did not end in a title, Diya's sights are set on a larger goal. Inspired by her success in Ahmedabad, she aspires to represent India at the Pickleball World Cup in Vietnam and feels confident about her chances of selection in the U18 Girls Singles category. "I believe I will qualify because I gave my best. The selectors witnessed my performance, and I think they will choose me, likely 99 percent," she stated.
However, the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) has indicated that they will consider performances from previous tournaments, emphasizing the importance of consistency. Diya's future now lies in the hands of the IPA selection committee, led by Aalap Sharma, as they prepare for the upcoming event.
When asked about Diya's prospects, Sharma praised her achievements but did not comment on her selection status. "She is a tennis player who has recently transitioned to pickleball and has been improving steadily," he noted.
Inspired by Ben Johns
Diya credits her success at the Junior Championship to her solid tennis foundation. "You can skip the first two years of basic training in pickleball, but perfecting your game takes time. Having a tennis background significantly helps in pickleball," she explained.
As the final team announcement approaches next week, Diya, who admires American player Ben Johns for his control, is excited about her significant victory. She hopes to compete more often and eventually make her mark on the PPA Tour. Additionally, she dreams of representing Hyderabad Royals in the Indian Pickleball League (IPBL).
Despite her swift ascent, Diya remains humble and recognizes the areas where she needs to improve. "I need to develop further and enhance my reset skills, as I'm proficient at drives. It's only been three months since I started playing, and I have much more to learn," she concluded.
