Curacao's Groundbreaking Performance in World Cup 2026

In a remarkable display, Curacao's goalkeeper Eloy Room achieved a record-setting performance during their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E match against Ecuador, resulting in a historic 0-0 draw. This match marked Curacao's first-ever point in World Cup history, while also complicating Ecuador's chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper showcased his skills in Kansas City, making an impressive 15 saves—the highest number recorded by a goalkeeper in a World Cup match that did not go into extra time. This feat surpassed all previous regulation-time performances, with only Tim Howard's 16 saves against Belgium in 2014 coming close, albeit over 120 minutes.

Throughout the match, Room remained steadfast against a relentless Ecuadorian offense, which unleashed 27 shots, including 21 from within the penalty area. The veteran goalkeeper's quick reflexes and strategic positioning thwarted numerous attempts.

Ecuador's captain, Enner Valencia, nearly opened the scoring within the first three minutes, but Room's exceptional save kept the score level. He continued to shine in the first half, denying multiple shots from John Yeboah, Gonzalo Plata, and Valencia as Ecuador dominated possession.

Pedro Vite also came close for Ecuador, curling a shot just wide, while Curacao's offensive efforts were limited to occasional counterattacks. Despite this, the Caribbean team displayed remarkable discipline and resilience under pressure.

The second half saw Ecuador intensifying their search for a goal. Moises Caicedo tested Room from long range, while Plata had both a shot and a close-range header saved by the Curacao keeper.

Curacao almost took an unexpected lead when Ecuador's goalkeeper Hernan Galindez made a stunning double save to deny Leandro Bacuna and Livano Comenencia during a dangerous counterattack.

Room's record-breaking night continued as he made crucial saves against Valencia's header, Kevin Rodriguez from a corner, and substitute Nilson Angulo on several occasions. Ecuador's frustration mounted as Piero Hincapie headed over from close range.

Ecuador's best chance to break the deadlock came late in the match when Angelo Preciado's cross hit the crossbar, but luck seemed to favor Curacao on a night dominated by their goalkeeper's brilliance.

This result leaves Ecuador winless in their last four World Cup matches, setting up a critical final group-stage match against Germany. For Curacao, this draw is a monumental achievement, with Room's unforgettable performance securing the nation's first World Cup point and clean sheet on the grandest stage of football.
