Ecuador's World Cup Hopes Diminished After Draw

Kansas City (Missouri) [US], June 21: Ecuador's aspirations to advance to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 took a hit as they were held to a goalless draw against Curacao in their Group E encounter.

The standout performance came from Curacao's goalkeeper, Eloy Room, who played a pivotal role in securing his team's first-ever point in World Cup history.

Despite Ecuador's dominance in possession and a flurry of scoring chances, they were thwarted time and again by the exceptional Room, who showcased one of the tournament's most impressive goalkeeping displays.

Right from the start, Ecuador posed a threat when captain Enner Valencia sprinted onto a long pass within the first three minutes, only to be met with a remarkable save from Room. Curacao managed a rare offensive foray as Sherel Floranus shot wide, but the first half was predominantly controlled by Ecuador.

John Yeboah tested Room following an energetic run, while Pedro Vite narrowly missed from the edge of the box. Valencia was again denied from close range, and both Gonzalo Plata and Yeboah forced additional saves from the Curacao keeper. At the other end, Ecuador's goalkeeper Hernan Galindez had little to do, making just a routine save from Livano Comenencia before halftime.

The second half saw Ecuador continue their relentless pursuit of a goal. Moises Caicedo attempted a long-range shot, and Plata's close-range header was brilliantly saved by Room.

Even while under constant pressure, Curacao remained a threat on the counterattack, nearly taking the lead when Galindez made an impressive double save against Leandro Bacuna and Comenencia.

Room's heroics persisted as he managed to keep out Valencia's header aimed at the far post and then stopped Kevin Rodriguez from the subsequent corner. Substitute Nilson Angulo also faced rejection from the Curacao goalkeeper, while Piero Hincapie headed over from a close range after another corner.

As Ecuador pushed hard for a late winner, Room proved unbeatable. Angulo had another shot saved, and Angelo Preciado came closest to scoring when his cross hit the crossbar in the dying moments.

This result leaves Ecuador winless in their last four World Cup matches, with a challenging final group game against Germany on the horizon. Conversely, for Curacao, this draw marks a historic achievement, securing their first point and clean sheet in a World Cup finals tournament.
