Dinesh Karthik's Witty Remarks on Pakistan's T20 World Cup Exit
Karthik's Banter with Atherton and Hussain
Dinesh Karthik engaged in some light-hearted banter with Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain regarding Pakistan's elimination from the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup. He referenced comments made by the former England captains about India's triumph in the 2025 Champions Trophy, reminding them that Pakistan had a similar advantage this time that India enjoyed last year.
For context, an agreement between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the International Cricket Council (ICC) stipulates that India and Pakistan will not host each other for tournaments, instead playing at neutral venues. Consequently, India's matches during the 2025 Champions Trophy were held in the UAE, where the Rohit Sharma-led team clinched the trophy. Critics argued that India had an unfair edge since other teams had to compete in two countries while India played in just one.
This time, Pakistan played all their matches in Sri Lanka, including their game against India in Colombo. Unfortunately, the team faced another disappointing tournament, failing to advance to the semi-finals. Karthik pointed out that Hussain and Atherton had previously criticized the Champions Trophy schedule, saying, "I anticipated Pakistan would make it to the semis because they consistently played in Colombo, stayed in one hotel, and were familiar with the pitches. You both complained that this was why India excelled in the Champions Trophy. By that logic, Pakistan should have performed better in this World Cup," during a podcast with SKY Sports.
Pakistan concluded the tournament with only one victory against a Test-playing nation, winning a nail-biting match by just five runs. They suffered a 61-run defeat against India, had their match against New Zealand washed out, and lost to England by two wickets.
