Devdutt Padikkal's Excitement for Test Series

In a recent interview, Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Test cricket, particularly after being informed of his selection for the series against Sri Lanka. He emphasized his commitment to being prepared for this opportunity.

During the two-match Test series, which India clinched 1-0, Padikkal made a significant impact, stepping in for the injured Sai Sudharsan, who usually bats at No. 3.

Following a stellar domestic season with Karnataka and playing a pivotal role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's consecutive IPL victories, Padikkal transitioned his success to the international stage. He was named Player of the Series, amassing 328 runs in just three innings, averaging over 109, including two centuries with a top score of 167.

In a conversation with JioStar, Padikkal acknowledged that Test opportunities are rare and require relentless effort and preparation. He stated, "I was definitely looking forward to it. Such chances don’t come easily; it demands hard work to keep improving and be ready for when they arise."

He added, "Being informed at the start of the series that I would be playing was thrilling, and I felt I was in the best form of my career, so I was eager to take on the challenge."

Discussing his role at No. 3, a position once held by legends like Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara, Padikkal maintained that his primary focus is on contributing to the team's success rather than drawing comparisons with past players.

"Ultimately, it’s about performing on the field. The batting position is secondary; my goal is to help the team," he remarked.

He acknowledged the legacy of great players who have occupied the No. 3 spot and recognized that scrutiny and comparisons are inevitable. However, he remains focused on enjoying his game, believing that success will follow.

Padikkal also shared insights from his discussions with former India head coach Rahul Dravid regarding the nuances of Test batting and the necessity of spending extended periods at the crease.

"I’ve had numerous discussions with him about batting and the importance of patience. It all circles back to preparation and clarity in your approach," he explained.

"Having a clear mindset about your plans, regardless of your batting position, is crucial. Those are the valuable lessons I’ve learned from him," Padikkal concluded.
