Major Sporting Event Coming to Delhi

New Delhi, May 6: The Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, has officially announced that the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship (CTTC 2026) will take place from July 27 to August 2, 2026, at Thyagraj Stadium in the capital, according to a press release from the Education Minister's office.


This championship is being organized collaboratively by the Delhi Government and the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), marking a significant return of high-profile international sporting events to New Delhi.


Participants from over 35 Commonwealth nations, including England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Scotland, Wales, Nigeria, Kenya, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago, are anticipated to compete in this tournament, which is expected to be one of the largest editions of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship ever.


The week-long event will feature competitions across various categories, culminating in the finals on August 2. Officials have indicated that further details regarding ticket sales, volunteer opportunities, and the match schedule will be announced in the upcoming months.


In attendance were Delhi Government Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood, senior Sports Department officials, Chairman of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation Vivek Kohli, Advisor Brijesh Mathur, TTFI Vice President Rajiv Duggal, Delhi State Table Tennis Association Vice President Deepali Gupta, Secretary General Balbir Singh, Dronacharya Awardee Sandeep Gupta, and other notable figures from the sports community.


During her address, the Chief Minister emphasized Delhi's rich history of hosting prestigious sporting events, asserting that the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship will enhance the capital's status on the global sports stage. She affirmed the Delhi Government's commitment to providing top-notch infrastructure and a seamless experience for both athletes and spectators.


Thyagraj Stadium will be the main venue for competitions and ceremonies, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure a world-class experience for all involved. The Chief Minister noted that this event would highlight Delhi's capabilities in hosting international events and its vibrant sports culture, aligning with the Vision 2036 Olympics mission.


Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood remarked that the Delhi Government is dedicated to establishing the capital as India's premier 'Sports Capital.' He believes that hosting the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2026 will be a pivotal step in achieving this goal.
