Delhi Capitals Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Thrilling Win Over Punjab Kings
Delhi Capitals' Remarkable Chase
Under the leadership of Axar Patel, the Delhi Capitals have kept their playoff aspirations alive in IPL 2026 by successfully chasing down a target of 211 runs against the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Monday. This victory marks their fifth win of the season, elevating them to the 7th position in the league standings with a total of 10 points from 12 matches. To enhance their chances of qualifying, they must secure victories in their remaining two matches by substantial margins.
BCCI Imposes Fine on Axar Patel
Despite the win, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a fine on Axar Patel for his team's slow over rate during the match. According to the IPL's Code of Conduct, this was the first offence of the season, resulting in a fine of Rs 12 lakhs for Patel.
Initially, the Delhi Capitals bowlers struggled, conceding 70 runs in the first five overs without taking a wicket. However, they managed to restrict the Punjab Kings to 210 runs in their 20 overs by adapting to the seam-friendly conditions. Axar noted the significant improvement in the middle overs, where the bowlers tightened their grip on the game.
Reflecting on the match, Axar expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "We are a good team playing good cricket, but we need to win those crucial moments." He highlighted the contributions of David Miller, Ashutosh Sharma, and Madhav Tiwari, who played pivotal roles in the batting recovery after a shaky start.
