An Insight into Anil Kumble's Intimidating On-Field Persona

New Delhi, September 2: Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has shared his memories of the formidable presence of legendary spinner Anil Kumble. He recounted how he would sometimes make appeals even when he was certain a batter was not out, simply due to Kumble's relentless expectations behind the stumps.

During an appearance on The Great Indian Cricket Show aired on Doordarshan, Dasgupta discussed his experiences while keeping wickets for Kumble. He emphasized the stark difference between Kumble's demeanor off the field and his fierce attitude during matches.

“Anil Kumble is a completely different person off the field. However, on the field, he is genuinely intimidating. I have faced his wrath numerous times. I believed that I should only appeal when I was convinced the batter was out, but Kumble often reprimanded me for not appealing enough,” Dasgupta explained.

He continued, “Given that it was Kumble bowling, I would sometimes appeal forcefully, even when I knew it was not out and the decision was unlikely to go our way.”

Kumble is celebrated as one of India's most successful match-winners, concluding his international career as the nation's top wicket-taker with 956 wickets over an 18-year span from 1990 to 2008.

He is also one of only three bowlers in Test cricket history to take all 10 wickets in a single innings, achieving this remarkable feat against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999 with figures of 10/74.

Additionally, Kumble holds the record for the highest number of Test wickets by an Indian bowler and is known for his incredible stamina, having bowled over 40,000 deliveries in the longest format of the game.

Dasgupta, who played for India from 2001 to 2002, participated in eight Tests and five ODIs. He scored his first Test century against England at Mohali in 2001 and later transitioned into a cricket commentator and analyst.
