Debate Intensifies Over Auqib Nabi's Exclusion from India's Test Squad Against Afghanistan

The exclusion of Auqib Nabi from India's one-off Test against Afghanistan has ignited discussions about the criteria for team selection. With the BCCI naming him as a net bowler, former cricketer Madan Lal argues that Nabi's impressive domestic performance, including leading the Ranji Trophy with 60 wickets, should have earned him a spot in the squad. Lal emphasizes the importance of prioritizing domestic achievements over T20 performances in Test selection. As Nabi prepares to join the team, the situation presents both an opportunity and a challenge for the talented bowler.

Auqib Nabi's Role as a Net Bowler

The discussion surrounding Auqib Nabi Dar's omission from India's upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan has gained momentum following the BCCI's announcement that the Jammu & Kashmir fast bowler will join the team as a net bowler and a potential backup in case of injuries to the main bowlers ahead of the match scheduled for June 6 in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. Former World Cup champion Madan Lal highlighted the irony of the situation, expressing his belief that Nabi should have been included in the squad after an impressive domestic season. He cautioned against prioritizing T20 performances over red-ball achievements when it comes to Test selection.

The Importance of Domestic Performance

When Can IPL Performance Matter For India Selection?

Madan Lal emphasized that the selectors should prioritize domestic cricket entirely. He stated, “It ultimately depends on the selectors. However, domestic cricket should take precedence. If T20 cricket is to be prioritized, then IPL can be one of the criteria for selection. But for Test cricket, domestic performance is crucial. It’s about identifying players who can endure long innings and handle the demands of the longer format.”

Nabi's Impressive Domestic Season

Why Auqib Nabi Deserved A Place In India's One-Off Test Squad vs Afghanistan?

The former cricketer argued that Nabi's achievements warranted serious consideration for the Test against Afghanistan, particularly after he took 60 wickets, leading the Ranji Trophy season. “I believe he should have been selected,” he remarked. “However, he must continue to strive for excellence. These situations arise, and it’s up to the individual to handle setbacks. Playing for India requires mental strength and resilience.”

The Challenge of International Cricket

Madan Lal also warned against reducing the discussion to mere outrage, noting that international cricket presents unique challenges. Nabi played a pivotal role in securing Jammu and Kashmir's first Ranji Trophy title this year, achieving 60 wickets in 10 matches with an impressive average of 12.57. “It’s disappointing, and this happens to many players. But persistence is key. He deserved selection based on his performance. I’ve seen him bowl, and he has a solid technique,” he added.

“Two years ago, there was significant praise for Umran Malik. Auqib Nabi is a talented bowler with good technique. Ultimately, it’s about mental fortitude and the ability to perform at the international level. There’s a stark difference between domestic and international cricket. Given his performance and the way he led J&K, I believe the selectors should have considered him,” the 75-year-old concluded.

Nabi's Future Prospects

For Nabi, this recent development adds an interesting layer to his journey. Even if he does not make it into the final squad, being part of the Test setup could provide both validation and a bittersweet experience, as he remains close to the Indian team without yet donning the national colors.
