In a recent development, England's David Payne has been acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to take the place of Australian cricketer Jack Edwards for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). Payne's signing comes at a cost of INR 1.5 crore after Edwards was sidelined due to an injury. Edwards had previously been secured by SRH for INR 3 crore during the IPL 2026 mini auction. The left-arm pacer is set to make his debut for SRH in their first match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28.

David Alan Payne, a left-arm fast-medium bowler, began his professional career with Gloucestershire in 2009. He has represented England in both One Day Internationals and Test matches at the Under-19 level, being part of the squad for the 2010 U-19 Cricket World Cup. At 35 years old, Payne boasts an impressive record of 304 wickets across 233 T20 matches and has made one ODI appearance for England, where he took a wicket against the Netherlands in 2022. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2024 T20 Blast, claiming 33 wickets in just 17 innings, and is currently the top wicket-taker for Gloucestershire in T20 cricket. Additionally, he has played for Welsh Fire in The Hundred and had a notable performance in the BBL, where he was named Player of the Match in the BBL15 final, helping the Perth Scorchers secure their sixth title.


In a related announcement, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have made player replacements for the TATA IPL 2026. Saurabh Dubey has been signed by KKR to replace Akash Deep, who is out for the season due to a lumbar stress injury. Akash Deep, a right-arm pacer with 10 Test appearances for India, will receive medical care from the BCCI Medical Team in Bengaluru. Saurabh will join KKR for INR 30 lakh, while Payne steps in for Jack Edwards at SRH for INR 1.5 crore. SRH will also be without Pat Cummins at the start of the tournament, with Ishan Kishan taking on the role of interim captain. The tournament opener will see SRH face RCB at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 28.
