Daizen Maeda Expresses Regret After Japan's Exit from FIFA World Cup 2026
Maeda's Apology to Fans
Following Japan's defeat to Brazil in the Round of 32, striker Daizen Maeda reached out to fans, expressing his regret for not fulfilling their expectations.
In a thrilling match, Brazil secured a 2-1 victory with a dramatic goal from Gabriel Martinelli in the 95th minute, ensuring their progression to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
On social media platform X, Maeda conveyed his apologies for the team's performance, noting that Japan has once again fallen short of surpassing their previous best, which was also a Round of 32 exit. He emphasized that the journey since the 2022 World Cup has been a source of pride for him.
"I sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations. However, over the past three and a half years since the Qatar World Cup, everything we have built together with players, staff, families, and fans is my pride. Thank you for all your support. @jfa_samuraiblue #FIFAWorldCup2026."

Japan surprised the five-time champions in the first half when Kaishu Sano intercepted a loose ball and executed a remarkable 40-yard solo run, scoring to put Japan ahead 1-0.
Despite a solid first half from Japan's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, Brazil ramped up the pressure. Gabriel Magalhaes delivered a precise cross that allowed Casemiro to head in the equalizer, making it 1-1.
As the match seemed headed for extra time, Danilo regained possession and found Endrick, who set up Bruno Guimaraes. Guimaraes then passed to an unmarked Gabriel Martinelli, who calmly finished to secure Brazil's 2-1 win.
With this victory, Brazil moves on to the Round of 16, where they will face either Ivory Coast or Norway on July 5 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
This Round of 32 match was a memorable encounter, as meetings between Brazil and Japan in World Cup history are quite rare. Prior to this match, the two teams had only met once in the World Cup, during Germany 2006, where Japan also took an early lead before Brazil came back to win 4-1.
