Cristiano Ronaldo's Sister Suggests World Cup 2026 May Be His Final International Tournament
Katia Aveiro Hints at Ronaldo's International Retirement
In Toronto, Katia Aveiro, sister of Cristiano Ronaldo, has indicated that the FIFA World Cup 2026 might signal the conclusion of the Portugal captain's international career. She referred to the ongoing tournament as his "last dance" with the national squad, as reported by a sports news outlet.
While speaking to the media outside BMO Field in Toronto before Portugal's Round of 32 match against Croatia, Katia expressed her belief that Ronaldo's time with the national team is coming to an end.
"Based on what I know, he might be preparing to say goodbye. Enjoy the moments while they last. Although he isn't saying farewell today, that time is approaching," Katia stated.
"I truly think this is his farewell. Cherish it. Finding someone of his caliber will be challenging," she added.
When questioned about whether Ronaldo would retire after achieving 1,000 career goals, Katia specified that her comments were directed at his national team career.
"After reaching 1,000 goals? Yes, that's significant. I'm referring to the national team. From a trustworthy source, I believe this World Cup is indeed his last dance," she clarified.
These comments came just before Portugal's thrilling 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 32, where Ronaldo successfully converted a penalty, and substitute Goncalo Ramos scored a last-minute goal to advance Roberto Martinez's team to the Round of 16.
At 41, Ronaldo holds the record for the most appearances and goals for Portugal. The five-time Ballon d'Or recipient has participated in several FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships, playing a pivotal role in Portugal's triumph at the UEFA Euro 2016 and the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019.
Portugal is set to face Spain in the Round of 16 as Ronaldo embarks on what could be his final World Cup journey.
