Cristiano Ronaldo Remains Hopeful After Portugal's Draw with DR Congo in World Cup Opener
Ronaldo's Optimism Despite Draw
In Texas, USA, on June 18, Portugal's captain Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his optimism following a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. He emphasized the need for the team to quickly redirect their focus to the upcoming game.
Ronaldo shared his thoughts on X, stating, "It wasn’t the start we desired, but this is far from over. Keep your heads up and concentrate on the next match," showcasing his determination despite the disappointing result.
The match proved challenging for Ronaldo, who struggled to make a significant impact during the game. He recorded only 25 touches, attempted three shots without success, and won just one duel, indicating how well the DR Congo defense managed to contain him, as noted by ESPN FC's X account.
This performance marked one of the lowest levels of involvement in his World Cup career, with the second-fewest touches he has ever had in a World Cup starting match, highlighting his limited role in Portugal's offensive efforts.
Adding to the concern over his form in major tournaments, Ronaldo has now gone ten consecutive matches without scoring in significant competitions, a streak that continues despite his vast experience and global recognition.
In the match, Portugal initially took the lead with Joao Neves scoring in the sixth minute, thanks to a precise cross from Pedro Neto. However, after this early advantage, the team seemed to lose momentum, passing the ball without urgency and creating few opportunities, while DR Congo posed a threat on counterattacks.
Their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa, unmarked, headed in a cross from Arthur Masuaku, leveling the score.
Portugal thought they had regained the lead early in the second half with an impressive effort from Joao Cancelo, but it was disallowed for offside. DR Congo then came close to scoring, with Cedric Bakambu hitting the post after overpowering Bruno Fernandes, serving as a warning for Portugal.
Late in the game, substitute Francisco Conceicao injected some energy into the Portuguese side, creating chances for Ronaldo, but the veteran forward was unable to convert, as the team continued to struggle with finishing.
Despite applying late pressure, Portugal could not secure a victory, and DR Congo held on for a memorable point in their first World Cup appearance since 1974.
