Cristiano Ronaldo Declares FIFA World Cup 2026 as His Final Tournament
Ronaldo's Last World Cup Journey
In a recent announcement, Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, revealed that the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 will mark the end of his remarkable career in the tournament. As his team gears up for a crucial Round of 16 match against Spain, he expressed his desire to savor every moment of this significant event.
Speaking to the press before the knockout game, the 41-year-old star put an end to rumors regarding his future in the World Cup, while also expressing optimism that Portugal's journey would extend beyond the last 16.
Ronaldo stated, "I want to enjoy it as much as possible, because it will be my last World Cup, yes. But I hope that tomorrow won’t be my last game in the World Cup."
The five-time Ballon d'Or recipient has played in all four of Portugal's matches so far, netting three goals. He brushed aside persistent inquiries about retirement, emphasizing that his primary focus is on supporting the national team.
"I’m always committed, body and soul, to helping the National Team. Whether I’m playing or not, I’ll always have an important role," he remarked.
He further added, "I’ll finish [retire] when I want to, not when you want me to. It’s a waste of time to keep asking that question. But I don’t want to draw attention to that. The most important thing is tomorrow."
Despite acknowledging that this will be his final World Cup, Ronaldo made it clear that Portugal has aspirations of winning the trophy.
"If we didn’t have the idea that we could win the World Cup, we wouldn’t be here. It’s been a beautiful experience. We’ve improved game by game," he noted.
He recognized the challenges of the competition, stating, "We know it’s a competition where it’s impossible to play well in every game, and it’s not easy for anyone; just look at who’s already been eliminated. I see the team as calm; we’ve trained well, we’ve prepared well."
When asked about his performance, Ronaldo commented, "I don’t think I’ve been doing that badly... I’ve scored three goals. Others have scored more, but because they are doing very well. They feel very good. But let’s see if I can score tomorrow."
Portugal enters this match following a thrilling 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 32, with Goncalo Ramos scoring a last-minute goal to keep their championship hopes alive.
Roberto Martinez’s squad is aiming for consecutive FIFA World Cup quarter-final appearances for the first time in the nation’s history, although they haven’t won back-to-back knockout matches since 2006.
Their opponents, Spain, have shown impressive form throughout the tournament, having advanced to the Round of 16 with a dominant 3-0 victory over Austria. They also became the first team since Germany in the 2014 World Cup final to prevent their opponents from registering a single shot on target in a knockout match.
The last encounter between these Iberian rivals at the World Cup was in 2018, where Ronaldo scored a stunning hat-trick in a memorable 3-3 draw. Portugal will now look to their captain for another standout performance to extend his farewell World Cup journey by at least one more match.
