Cricket South Africa Delays Women's T20 World Cup Squad Announcement

Cricket South Africa has delayed the announcement of its Women's T20 World Cup squad, originally set for today, due to internal reviews. The decision comes as key players like Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp face uncertainties regarding their selection. The tournament is set to take place in England from June 12 to June 28, 2026, featuring 12 teams across seven venues. Stay tuned for updates on the squad announcement and player availability.

Announcement Postponed

Johannesburg, South Africa - Cricket South Africa (CSA) has postponed the announcement of its Women's T20 World Cup squad, which was set to be revealed just minutes ago, as reported by a sports news outlet.

Originally, CSA had planned to disclose the squad during a live online media briefing at 11 am local time on Monday. However, a communication sent only ten minutes prior indicated that the announcement would be delayed due to the need for 'further internal reviews,' with a new date to be announced later.

Regulatory Requirements

According to regulations, teams must submit their final rosters to the ICC before the tournament's support period begins in early June. Once these squads are submitted, changes can only be made in the event of a medical issue or with ICC approval.

Internal Matters and Selection

The report also mentioned that the postponement is related to a 'minor internal matter' rather than a selection disagreement, although there are some emerging concerns regarding the squad's composition.

Former fast bowler Shabnim Ismail has expressed her availability for selection, and national coach Mandla Mashimbyi is reportedly interested in including her, despite her absence from international cricket for over three years. Ismail retired following the 2023 home T20 World Cup but has continued to participate in franchise leagues.

Pace Attack Concerns

If selected, Ismail would bolster a pace attack that has primarily depended on Marizanne Kapp, who has been out of action since February due to health issues. Kapp missed the series against New Zealand and India during her recovery but is anticipated to return in time for the World Cup.

Dane van Niekerk's Uncertainty

Meanwhile, Dane van Niekerk, Kapp's wife and former captain, who made her return to international cricket last year, remains uncertain for selection. After participating in nine matches during the 2025/26 season, she sustained a calf injury in New Zealand and has been sidelined since. She has not resumed bowling since her return, and while she is considered a middle-order batting option, the squad's balance may hinder her inclusion.

Upcoming Tournament Details
