Cricket Legend Sir Garfield Sobers Passes Away at 89

Sir Garfield Sobers, one of cricket's most celebrated all-rounders and former West Indies captain, has died at the age of 89. His son confirmed the news, revealing that Sobers was just ten days shy of his 90th birthday. With an illustrious career spanning from 1954 to 1974, Sobers scored over 8,000 runs in Test cricket and took 235 wickets. He was also the first player to hit six sixes in an over in First-Class cricket. His remarkable achievements have left an indelible mark on the sport.
 

Tribute to a Cricket Icon

Sir Garfield Sobers, renowned as one of cricket's all-time great all-rounders and a former captain of the West Indies, passed away on Friday at the age of 89.


The news of his passing was shared by his son, Daniel.


Sobers was just ten days away from celebrating his 90th birthday.


Regarded as one of the sport's finest all-rounders, Sobers participated in 93 Test matches, amassing a remarkable 8,032 runs at an impressive average of 57.78, which includes 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries from March 1954 to April 1974.


As a left-handed batsman and a left-arm fast-medium bowler, he took 235 wickets in Test cricket and played one ODI, where he claimed a single wicket.


Notably, Sobers was the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in First-Class cricket, achieving this feat while playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in 1968.
