Ceremonial Torch Handed Over for Chess Olympiad 2026

The countdown for the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, officially commenced with a ceremonial torch handover. This significant event featured FIDE Interim President Viswanathan Anand and Nitin Narang, President of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), presenting the torch to Javokhir Sindarov, the winner of the Candidates 2026 and a leading player from Uzbekistan.


Scheduled to take place from September 15 to 27, the Chess Olympiad is renowned as the premier team competition, showcasing the world's elite chess players.


Initiated by FIDE in 2022, the Chess Olympiad Torch Ceremony draws inspiration from the Olympic flame, aiming to highlight the sport's global influence and generate enthusiasm for the upcoming event.


“The Chess Olympiad Torch symbolizes the connection between nations and generations through chess. This tradition, started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India in 2022, is particularly meaningful as the flame travels from India, the birthplace of chess, to Uzbekistan, a nation with a rich chess heritage. We extend our best wishes to Javokhir Sindarov and Uzbekistan as they prepare to host the chess community,” stated Nitin Narang, AICF President.


India enters the tournament as the reigning champion in both the open and women's categories, making them strong contenders to retain their titles.
