Controversy Unfolds in IPL 2026 Opener Between RCB and SRH
Dramatic Moments in IPL 2026 Opener
A significant controversy arose during the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. SRH found themselves struggling at 29-3 while batting first, thanks to Jacob Duffy's impressive bowling. However, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen stepped up, forming a remarkable partnership of 97 runs off just 53 balls. With the score at 126-3 in the 13th over, RCB appeared to be losing control of the match until Romario Shepherd's introduction changed the game. He dismissed Klaasen for 31 after a spectacular catch by Phil Salt, but the decision was contentious.
Shepherd bowled a short ball, which Klaasen pulled towards the leg side, where Salt made a stunning catch. Yet, there was considerable uncertainty regarding whether Salt had touched the boundary cushion. After reviewing the footage, the umpire ruled Klaasen out, much to his displeasure.
As more replays surfaced, it appeared that the boundary cushions had shifted slightly when Salt caught the ball, igniting a heated discussion online.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, suggesting that it was evident the foot had made contact with the boundary sponge. He remarked, "It looked to me like the foot had touched the boundary sponge … that’s a significant call for RCB. Not sure how you can give that out and be absolutely sure no part of the foot touched the sponge … and the sponge moved … a bit of a giveaway," he posted on X.
RCB Starts Title Defense Strongly
Despite the controversy, SRH managed to score over 200 runs, finishing at 201-9, with Ishan Kishan contributing 80 runs. However, RCB secured victory comfortably in the 16th over, with Virat Kohli scoring an impressive 69 off 38 balls and Devdutt Padikkal adding 61 runs, marking a successful start to their title defense.
