Concerns Surround Rohit Sharma's Participation in ODI World Cup 2027
Rohit Sharma's Fitness in Question
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is uncertain about Rohit Sharma's involvement in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027. His fitness remains a significant concern, as the board is not fully assured of his capability to endure the demands of a 50-over match. Rohit had previously missed a considerable number of games for the Mumbai Indians during IPL 2026 due to a hamstring injury. Additionally, selectors and team management are apprehensive regarding Hardik Pandya's ability to bowl his full quota of overs. A source from the BCCI mentioned that ODI cricket lacks the flexibility of an impact player, emphasizing that at Rohit's age, recovery from injuries can be prolonged. “Rohit didn’t report to the BCCI’s centre of excellence (CoE) for those three weeks. He has become lean, but there are concerns about his body being able to take the load of high-performance sport. He has to field for 50 overs. ODI cricket doesn’t have the option of an Impact Player like IPL. Body takes time to heal when you are so close to turning 40,” the source stated. Regarding Hardik, it was noted that he was not informed about fitness issues until just 48 hours before the selection meeting. Although he returned to play against Kolkata Knight Riders, he was unable to complete his four-over quota.
Need for Backup Openers
India Needs Backup Openers
The BCCI selectors are worried that if Rohit is unable to join the World Cup squad, there may not be sufficient backup openers available, especially if either Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal sustains an injury. They believe it is crucial to develop more openers in preparation for such scenarios. “There aren’t many ODIs before the World Cup. As it is, Jaiswal hasn’t got enough game time. Ishan has been picked so that he can double up as an opener. But if Rohit fails to make it to the World Cup and either Shubman Gill or Jaiswal gets injured, there needs to be another opener ready,” the source explained.
Rohit and Kohli's Fitness Comparison
Rohit-Kohli Can't Be Clubbed Together
Furthermore, the BCCI source indicated that Rohit and Virat Kohli should not be compared in terms of fitness. While Kohli's physical condition is reportedly better than that of many players, a decision regarding Rohit must be made after discussions with the BCCI medical team. “At this moment, Kohli’s fitness and form are better than most cricketers in India. But one has to understand that Kohli and Rohit can’t be clubbed together anymore. A firm decision needs to be taken on Rohit after consulting the BCCI medical team,” the source concluded.
