AB de Villiers Raises Concerns for Mumbai Indians

AB de Villiers, the former captain of South Africa, has voiced his concerns regarding the Mumbai Indians as they prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). He pointed out that despite the team's impressive roster, there is a significant worry about one of their key fast bowlers potentially lacking the edge that once made him a standout performer. De Villiers shared his insights on his YouTube channel, noting that while the squad appears well-rounded, there are signs of decline in one of their experienced bowlers.

“They don't need more all-rounders than what they already have. But the one worry for me is Trent Boult. It's similar to Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar] situation, where he has lost a yard. He is not as spicy as he was from 2018, 2019 and 2020, even earlier 2015,” de Villiers remarked, suggesting a drop in both effectiveness and pace.

He elaborated on how Boult's performance has waned over time, stating, “He was clocking in low 140s, really swinging it late because of that fiery wrist he got, but he's maybe pulled back like a yard, and he seems to be more expensive over the last while that I have watched him play over at SA20.”

De Villiers cautioned that the team might develop a 'false sense of security' due to this perceived decline. “Maybe that's an area where they feel they have a lot of insurance there, but I feel maybe it's a false sense of security. It could be an area some of the opposition batters will target,” he added.

Conversely, former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund expressed a more optimistic view, highlighting the depth and balance of the Mumbai Indians. “They've got a lot of players in form, which is what makes them scary. De Kock will relish being in Mumbai, playing at the Wankhede Stadium. They've got plenty of options and look very good on paper,” he stated.

Even though the Mumbai Indians seem poised for another title chase, ABD's analysis serves as a reminder that even the strongest teams can harbor hidden vulnerabilities.
