Commonwealth Sports Delegation's Visit to Ahmedabad

A delegation from Commonwealth Sports, headed by president Dr. Donald Rukare, has concluded a three-day assessment of potential venues in and around Ahmedabad for the upcoming 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Accompanied by CEO Katie Sadleir and Director of Games & Assurance Darren Hall, Dr. Rukare's team toured significant locations in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, and Ekta Nagar. This visit is part of the preparations to ensure the Games are welcoming, sustainable, and memorable, celebrating a century of the Commonwealth movement.

Despite being in the initial stages of planning, Dr. Rukare expressed optimism, stating that India is poised to deliver an extraordinary sports event.

“We are truly impressed by the extensive planning, the quality of the venues, and the robust support from both national and state authorities in India. Ahmedabad’s vision for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is ambitious and forward-thinking. This centenary offers a unique opportunity to honor the Games' rich legacy while reimagining their future for the next century. Our discussions this week have bolstered our confidence in India’s ability to host a landmark edition in 2030,” remarked the Commonwealth Sports president.

The delegation also engaged in comprehensive discussions with P.T. Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association, and officials from the sports ministry on Friday.

India takes pride in hosting the Commonwealth Sports delegation, showcasing the significant advancements made towards organizing a world-class Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030. The visit underscores our mutual commitment to excellence, collaboration, and innovation in sports. We are optimistic that, in partnership with Commonwealth Sports and all stakeholders, we will create a historic and athlete-focused Games that inspire the Commonwealth,” stated the IOA president.

15-17 Sports Expected in 2030

Dr. Rukare further revealed that, unlike the 2026 Glasgow Games, the 2030 edition is set to feature a comprehensive program of 15 to 17 sports disciplines. However, he cautioned that it is premature to finalize which sports will be included in the 2030 lineup.

“We are pleased to see progress being made as we believe in collaborating with the city, the nation, and our partners at Commonwealth Games India. Ahmedabad is capable of hosting a diverse array of events. We anticipate announcing around 16 to 17 sports disciplines for 2030. We will provide a definitive update on our status in the coming months,” Dr. Rukare stated.

“We are confident that shortly, we will be able to announce the sports program and the athletes who will participate, as it is fundamentally about the athletes having an exceptional experience, not only in terms of the sporting events but also the cultural aspects,” he added.
