Colombia Advances to Knockout Stage

Zapopan [Mexico], June 24: In a thrilling encounter, James Rodriguez showcased his exceptional skills as Colombia clinched a 1-0 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo, securing their spot in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. This match took place at the Guadalajara Stadium during their second Group K fixture.

The experienced midfielder was pivotal in Colombia's offensive play, becoming the first Colombian since Carlos Valderrama in 1998 to create five scoring chances in a World Cup match, as reported by OptaJose.

Daniel Munoz netted the crucial goal in the 76th minute, helping Colombia maintain their flawless tournament record with two victories and six goals scored. This win confirmed their advancement to the knockout stage with one group match remaining against Portugal.

This marks the third consecutive World Cup where Colombia has reached the knockout rounds, having previously done so in 2014 and 2018, after narrowly missing qualification for the 2022 tournament.

At 34 years old, Rodriguez, participating in his third World Cup, proved his lasting impact on the global stage. The former Golden Boot winner from 2014 continues to be a key player for Colombia, having also won the FIFA Puskas Award for his stunning volley against Uruguay and holding the record for the most assists in a single Copa America edition.

Munoz's goal adds to his impressive World Cup narrative, as he becomes only the third Colombian man to score in both of his nation’s opening matches at a World Cup, following in the footsteps of Adolfo Valencia in 1994 and Rodriguez in 2014. He also joins Yerry Mina as the only Colombian defender to score multiple goals in World Cup history.

Despite the victory, Liverpool's Luis Diaz faced a challenging match, being flagged offside five times, a feat not seen since Robin van Persie was caught offside six times in 2014.

DR Congo's goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi delivered a remarkable performance, making five saves in the first 20 minutes, a record not matched since Jamaica's Warren Barrett in 1998.

Ultimately, Munoz's late goal was enough to propel Colombia into the knockout stage with style.
