Chennai to Host World-Class Olympic City and Motorsports Hub

Chennai is set to become a hub for sports with the announcement of a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated motorsports city by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. Tamil Nadu's Ambitious Sports Development Plans

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On September 3, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art Tamil Nadu Olympic City in Chennai, as announced in the State Assembly under Rule 110.

The Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority will spearhead the construction of this Olympic City, which is set to include top-tier sports facilities, advanced training equipment, a High Performance Training Centre, and specialized centres for Sports Science and Sports Medicine.

Additionally, the facility will boast modern amenities, providing accommodation for athletes and coaches, as highlighted by Chief Minister Vijay.

This Olympic City aims to serve as a comprehensive sports hub, equipping Tamil Nadu athletes with the necessary training and resources to enhance their chances of securing medals at the Olympics and other global sporting events.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced plans for a dedicated motorsports city in Chennai, designed to host Formula 1-4 races.

In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) established a task force to oversee motorsports, with the goal of reintroducing Formula 1 racing to India by 2028.

"Our objective is to bring back F1 to India by 2028. To achieve this, we have formed a task force that will monitor motorsports and report to the Ministry," a source from MYAS stated.

Earlier this year, Arindam Ghosh, President of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), met with the Sports Ministry in New Delhi, discussing efforts to reinstate Formula 1 in India by 2030, along with a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) and MotoGP by 2028.

During the FMSCI Annual Awards, Ghosh remarked, "The discussions with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and other officials focused on bringing F1, MotoGP, and WRC to India."

He emphasized the importance of nurturing Indian drivers and advancing the motorsports sector in the country, noting that the FMSCI's recommendations were positively received.

At the Awards Night in Bengaluru, champions from various motorsport disciplines for 2025 were recognized, with 137 trophies awarded across 17 categories, including both two-wheeler and four-wheeler events. Awards were also presented to the winning teams, promoters, and sponsors of the national championships.
