Chennai Super Kings Sign Akash Madhwal as Replacement for Injured Player
CSK Welcomes New Bowler Akash Madhwal
The Chennai Super Kings have officially signed Akash Madhwal for a fee of ₹30 lakh. He joins the team as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre, who has been sidelined for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2026 due to an injury. This acquisition comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise, as they aim to maintain squad stability after Mhatre's departure mid-season.
Madhwal, a right-arm fast bowler, has previously played for the Mumbai Indians in the 2023 and 2024 IPL seasons, as well as for the Rajasthan Royals in 2025. Over his IPL career, he has participated in 17 matches, taking 23 wickets, including an impressive five-wicket haul during his debut season with the Mumbai Indians against the Lucknow Super Giants.
Renowned for his precise bowling and ability to perform under pressure, Madhwal's addition enhances CSK's bowling lineup. His experience in high-pressure situations could prove invaluable, especially during the crucial death overs in T20 matches. With a background in various team settings within the IPL, Madhwal brings both skill and adaptability to the squad.
For the Chennai Super Kings, this signing is a strategic move to adjust their game plan. Injuries are a common challenge in lengthy tournaments like the IPL, and teams often depend on mid-season signings to keep their campaigns alive. By choosing Madhwal, CSK has opted for a player with established IPL experience rather than an untested newcomer.
Mhatre, who captained India to victory in the U19 World Cup, had made a strong impression this season, scoring two fifties in six matches before suffering a left hamstring injury during Match 27 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. His injury is a significant loss for both him and the franchise, as he had shown great potential.
Currently, CSK is struggling at the eighth position with just four points from six games, and they will be looking to Madhwal to help turn their fortunes around.
