Chambal Ghariyals Aim for MPL Glory in Semi-Final Showdown
Chambal Ghariyals Prepare for Semi-Final Clash
Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], June 24: Fast bowler Avesh Khan attributes the Chambal Ghariyals' impressive performance in the Madhya Pradesh League (MPL) T20 2026 to their well-rounded squad and fearless mindset as they prepare for a pivotal semi-final match against the Jabalpur Royal Lions at Holkar Stadium this Thursday.
The Ghariyals have established themselves as a formidable team in the tournament, entering the knockout phase with significant momentum. The winner of this semi-final will face the victor of the first semi-final between the Royal Nimar Eagles and the Rewa Jaguars in the championship match scheduled for Friday at the same venue.
In an interview ahead of the crucial match, Avesh expressed confidence in the team's focus despite their successful run in the league.
“It feels fantastic. We still have the semi-finals and finals ahead. The team is performing exceptionally well. Our matches have been fiercely competitive. In one game, the opposing team scored 260 runs, and we managed to chase it down comfortably. I’m enjoying my time with the Chambal Ghariyals. The team, crafted by our coach and owners, is well-balanced and filled with talented players,” Avesh remarked.
Both semi-finals are set to take place on Thursday, with the winners competing for the trophy on Friday in Indore.
Avesh, who has represented India in eight ODIs and 25 T20Is and has participated in every IPL season since his debut in 2017, noted that the busy schedule of the MPL has not posed a problem for the players.
“We’ve had consecutive matches during the group stages, so it won’t be a significant issue. With 10 teams, we have to manage things effectively. I view it as an opportunity. More teams mean more players can showcase their skills and potentially get selected for the IPL,” he added.
As the sole international player in the Chambal squad, Avesh enjoys mentoring younger teammates and helping them grasp the mindset needed at the elite level.
“There’s no pressure at all. We’ve been winning, but from our first meeting, our focus has been on giving our best effort, regardless of the outcome. When young players inquire about the mentality of international cricketers, I find it rewarding to share my experiences with them. It’s gratifying to see their game improve,” the 29-year-old shared.
Avesh also commended the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association for its initiatives to promote both men's and women's cricket through the franchise-based tournament. His remarks follow the Chambal Ghariyals Women’s thrilling two-run victory over Gwalior Shernis to clinch the 2026 MPL T20 Scindia Cup title.
“This is a wonderful initiative for both men’s and women’s cricket. Increasing the number of teams provides more players with exposure. It’s an excellent platform for them to be noticed for Ranji Trophy camps, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournaments, and even IPL or WPL trials. There’s a wealth of talent in both categories,” he stated.
When asked about standout performers this season, Avesh highlighted several teammates who have shone during the competition.
“In our team, players like Aman Bhadoria, Tripuresh Singh, and Ankush Singh are excelling. Ajay Rohera, Parth Chaudhary, and Parush Mandal are also performing well. There are talented players in every team who I believe will attract the attention of IPL scouts,” he noted.
The tournament has seen numerous remarkable individual performances. Jabalpur Royal Lions batter Ajay Rohera leads the run-scoring charts with 483 runs, while Gwalior Cheetahs’ Parth Chaudhary has scored 461 runs in eight matches. Parush Mandal tops the wicket-taking list with 19 wickets, while Avesh’s teammate Tripuresh Singh has taken 15 wickets for the Ghariyals. Ankush Singh remains the leading run-scorer for Chambal with 331 runs.
Avesh was also questioned about whether he would replicate his famous helmet-throw celebration if the Ghariyals win the trophy on Friday.
He famously threw his helmet after the Lucknow Super Giants’ dramatic last-ball victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2023, a moment that continues to resonate with cricket fans.
“I only did that once three years ago, and I don’t understand why people are still so fascinated by it. If I’m on the field and we win, we’ll see how it goes, but it’s all about the emotions of that moment,” Avesh said with a smile.
With a spot in the final on the line, the Chambal Ghariyals aim to maintain their unbeaten streak and move closer to a memorable MPL campaign.
