Captains' Briefing in Colombo

Colombo [Sri Lanka], February 5: In anticipation of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, the captains of Namibia and the USA, Gerhard Erasmus and Monank Patel, respectively, spoke to the media during a captains' briefing held in Colombo on Thursday. They shared their teams' preparations and aspirations for the tournament.

During the press conference, Patel expressed his enthusiasm about representing the USA on such a prestigious platform. He stated, “It’s an incredible feeling to come to India and participate in the World Cup. As a child, I always dreamed of playing in a World Cup, but never imagined I would do so in India while representing the USA. This is a significant moment, not just for me but for many players in our squad. We are genuinely excited to compete in the World Cup.”

Patel emphasized the team's readiness, having undergone extensive preparation in recent weeks. “We faced some challenges earlier, but we have adapted well. This World Cup opportunity has kept us focused, and we have trained diligently over the last three weeks. We are well-prepared and eager to take on the competition,” he noted. He also mentioned that the team composition had been meticulously planned, stating, “Before our first match, we had already strategized our balance and playing XI. Compared to the last World Cup, we have introduced several new players, creating a well-rounded and experienced team. We have been preparing and playing matches leading up to the World Cup, so we are confident in our combination and will adjust based on conditions.”

Patel further highlighted the professionalism within the squad, saying, “Everyone in our team is a full-time cricketer. My teammates and I have been representing the USA for the past seven to eight years. Each player knows how to seize the opportunity on a larger stage.”

Namibia and the USA find themselves in Group A alongside the defending champions India, Pakistan, and the Netherlands.

Namibia's captain Erasmus reflected on the challenges posed by their group and commended the professionalism of associate nations. “We have a challenging group, especially with the high-profile match between India and Pakistan. However, there are other formidable teams, including the USA, which boasts many experienced players participating in various leagues worldwide. They will undoubtedly be a strong contender in our group,” he remarked.

Regarding the support from Gary Kirsten, the South African veteran cricketer and World Cup-winning coach, Erasmus said, “Gary brings immense experience, not only from his playing days but also from coaching numerous teams globally. His familiarity with Indian cricket, having coached in the IPL and won the 2011 World Cup, is invaluable. His presence is well-received, as fans often request selfies with him. Beyond his cricketing expertise, he is a wonderful person to have in our squad, and the players truly appreciate his involvement.”

Erasmus also stressed the significance of professionalism within his team, stating, “All our players are full-time cricketers, so there are no excuses. It has been a challenging journey for associate nations to achieve this level of professionalism in the sport, especially during tournaments. Their success rates have improved significantly with increased exposure.”
