Cape Verde and Congo DR Shine as Underdogs in FIFA World Cup 2026
Underdog Stories in FIFA World Cup 2026
In a recent episode of the FIFA Podcast, football legends Diego Forlan and Hristo Stoichkov highlighted the remarkable journeys of Cape Verde and the Congo DR during the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Both teams have surpassed expectations by reaching the Round of 32 in the expanded tournament hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, showcasing that debutant nations can perform admirably beyond mere participation.
Stoichkov commended Cape Verde's outstanding debut, labeling their advancement to the Round of 32 as 'phenomenal' and akin to a fairy tale. He attributed their success to the team's organization, discipline, and positive mindset under coach Bubista, while recognizing the formidable challenge posed by Argentina in the knockout stage.
Cape Verde kicked off their World Cup journey with a goalless draw against Spain, followed by a thrilling 2-2 tie with Uruguay. They wrapped up the group stage with another scoreless draw against Saudi Arabia, finishing second in Group H and remaining unbeaten. Their next challenge is against Argentina on July 3 (local time).
Stoichkov remarked, 'What they’ve accomplished is phenomenal. Facing Argentina next is a big task, but their journey so far is truly amazing.' He noted the joy among the players and coaching staff, emphasizing the importance of their positive spirit.
The Congo DR's last World Cup appearance was in 1974, when they competed as Zaire and exited without scoring a goal. This time, the Leopards secured their spot by defeating Jamaica in the Play-Off Tournament and advanced from a group that included Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan, qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams. They will face England in the Round of 32 on July 5 (local time).
Stoichkov expressed that the success of both Cape Verde and the Congo DR is a result of years of hard work and development, stating, 'I’m not surprised by their performances; every team has prepared for this significant event.'
Forlan added that Cape Verde has thrived by playing without pressure, allowing them to enjoy their first knockout stage experience. He praised the team's physicality and experience, noting that many players compete in Portugal, and highlighted goalkeeper Vozinha's impressive performances.
Forlan stated, 'They’re enjoying the game. This is their first time qualifying for the next phase, and they have nothing to lose against Argentina. Their players are experienced and physically strong, making them the quintessential underdogs of the World Cup.'
As defending champions, Argentina, led by the all-time World Cup top scorer Lionel Messi, will enter the match on July 3 at Miami Stadium as favorites. However, Forlan believes that knockout football often favors determination and spirit, where underdogs can excel through courage and commitment.
He concluded, 'It’s going to be an exciting match. Argentina is performing well, and Messi is in great form. But when you have nothing to lose and play with joy, you can challenge anyone. I hope they can put up a good fight and make it tough for their opponents.'
