Cameron Green's IPL Role Sparks Controversy Amid Injury Concerns

Cameron Green's participation in IPL 2026 has sparked controversy after he was not utilized as a bowler due to a lower back injury. Despite being registered as an all-rounder, he was listed as a batter, leading to accusations of exploiting loopholes. Fans are questioning KKR's management decisions and whether they will continue to include Green in the lineup. As the situation unfolds, Cricket Australia has confirmed his injury status, adding to the intrigue surrounding his role in the tournament.

Kolkata Knight Riders' Dilemma with Cameron Green

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) invested a staggering Rs 25.2 crore to acquire all-rounder Cameron Green for the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, during their first match against the Mumbai Indians (MI), Green was not utilized as a bowler, leading to widespread confusion. KKR set a formidable target of 220 runs, but MI's openers, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Ricelton, dominated the game, scoring 148 runs off just 71 balls, effectively sealing KKR's fate. Many speculated that Green could have made a difference against this aggressive batting duo, yet he was not brought into the bowling attack. When questioned about this decision, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane suggested that inquiries should be directed to Cricket Australia (CA), implying that the board may have restricted Green's bowling capabilities.

In response to the unfolding situation, Cricket Australia clarified that Green is currently managing a lower back injury, which prevents him from bowling for a limited time. A spokesperson stated, “Cameron has a lower back injury that is being managed, requiring him to refrain from bowling temporarily. He is in the process of rebuilding his bowling loads in India, aiming for a return in approximately 10-12 days. KKR has been informed and is fully aware of this situation.” Notably, Green also did not bowl during the T20 World Cup or in the Sheffield Shield match.

Cameron Green's Registration Confusion

Cameron Green Registered As A Batter In IPL Auction

Interestingly, Cameron Green registered as a batsman during the IPL auction, despite being recognized as an all-rounder. He later explained that this was a mistake made by his manager. “I’ll be good to bowl,” Green stated. “I don’t know if my manager would appreciate this, but there was a mix-up on his part. He didn’t intend to select ‘batter’; it was an accidental choice. It’s amusing how this has unfolded, but it was indeed an error on his end,” he elaborated.

Fan Reactions and Accusations

Did Green Cheat KKR?

Meanwhile, social media users have accused Green of exploiting a loophole by registering as a batter, which legally protects him from any repercussions if he declines to bowl. Some fans have also criticized KKR's management for investing heavily in Green, given the prior knowledge of his inability to bowl in IPL 2026.

If Cameron Green remains unable to bowl, it will be intriguing to see whether KKR continues to include him in their lineup or opts for a specialist batsman instead.
