Cabo Verde Prepares for a Historic Clash

Miami [US], July 3: Vozinha, the experienced goalkeeper for Cabo Verde, has urged his fellow countrymen to unite as they gear up for a monumental match against Argentina, the defending champions, in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup.

The Blue Sharks have surprised many by becoming the smallest nation to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

Throughout the group stage, they showcased remarkable discipline, achieving a goalless draw against Spain, a thrilling 2-2 tie with Uruguay, and another clean sheet in a 0-0 match against Saudi Arabia.

Cabo Verde made history by being the first team since Chile in 1998 to advance beyond the group stage after drawing all three of their matches, demonstrating their resilience against stronger teams.

As they prepare for their historic encounter with Argentina, Vozinha shared a heartfelt message on social media, encouraging the nation to dream collectively.

“Tomorrow, we step onto the field with a chance to write one of the most beautiful chapters in our sport and our nation's history. More than just eleven players, an entire nation will be on that pitch. Tomorrow, there are no islands, no distances, no borders. We are one. One people, one flag, one heart beating for Cape Verde. May our strength, culture, morabeza (spirit), and courage resonate from the first to the last minute. Our land, our people, our dream,” Vozinha expressed.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper has been pivotal in Cabo Verde's impressive journey, achieving two clean sheets that place him among the legends of FIFA World Cup history.

As per OptaJose, Vozinha is now only the third goalkeeper to secure multiple clean sheets in a World Cup after turning 40, joining the ranks of England's Peter Shilton and Italy's Dino Zoff. Shilton leads with three clean sheets post-40, while Zoff and Vozinha each have two.

On the other hand, Argentina is not underestimating their opponents. After their final group match against Jordan, head coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged the challenge Cabo Verde presents, stating that they “will make things difficult” for the reigning champions as they aim for another memorable victory.
