Cabo Verde's Remarkable World Cup Performance

Miami [US], June 22: In a stunning display, FIFA World Cup newcomers Cabo Verde managed to secure a 2-2 draw against two-time champions Uruguay during their match at Miami Stadium on June 21 (local time).

Making history, Cabo Verde scored their inaugural FIFA World Cup goal in the 21st minute, thanks to Kevin Pina. The midfielder executed a beautifully curled long-range free-kick that left Uruguay's goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with no chance, giving the debutants an unexpected lead.

Uruguay quickly responded, gaining control of the game as they dominated possession. Their efforts bore fruit just before halftime when Maximiliano Araujo found the net in the 44th minute, leveling the score and sending La Celeste into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Despite Uruguay's apparent control in the second half, a defensive error allowed Cabo Verde to equalize. In the 61st minute, Mathias Olivera's poorly executed pass was intercepted by substitute Helio Varela, who skillfully rounded Muslera and slotted the ball into an empty net.

In the final moments, Uruguay intensified their attack, bringing on Darwin Nunez to bolster their offense. Nunez created a significant opportunity in stoppage time, but Federico Valverde failed to connect with his low cross.

Just moments later, in the 93rd minute, Agustin Canobbio had a chance to clinch victory but sent his shot over the crossbar, allowing Cabo Verde to secure a historic point.

This result marks a significant achievement for Cabo Verde in their first-ever FIFA World Cup, keeping Group H competitive as they head into the final matches. Currently, Spain leads the group with four points from two games, while Uruguay and Cabo Verde are tied with two points each.
