Bruno Fernandes Reflects on Manchester United's Dramatic Comeback Against Roma
Manchester United's Resurgence in UEFA Champions League
Manchester [UK], November 4: After leading his team to a thrilling comeback victory over Roma, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes emphasized that the players are not focused on saving anyone's job. He acknowledged that his recent performances had fallen short, which led to manager Michael Carrick benching him during the previous defeat to Bournemouth.
Following a challenging stretch of nine matches without a win, Manchester United finally found relief as they rallied from a two-goal deficit to triumph 3-2 against Roma at Old Trafford in their UEFA Champions League encounter. The team faced boos from the crowd after conceding two early goals, but Fernandes and Matheus Cunha's efforts turned the tide for the home side.
In a post-match interview with Amazon Prime, as reported by a Media House, Bruno stated, “We do not need to save anyone's job,” referring to Carrick's position. He expressed the team's commitment to overcoming their struggles, despite the media speculation surrounding the club. He also mentioned that he and Carrick had a candid discussion to clear the air.
Bruno acknowledged that Carrick's choice to bench him was justified due to his underwhelming performance. He emphasized the importance of accepting the manager's decisions, which does not diminish his faith in the coaching staff and his teammates.
“The manager decided to bench me because I wasn’t performing at the expected level. If that was a punishment, it was deserved,” he remarked. He reiterated his commitment to the team and his goal to win every upcoming match, viewing this victory as a potential turning point for the season.
Carrick described the win as a significant achievement for the club, highlighting the resilience shown by the players. “We’ve demonstrated a lot of character as a group. This experience reveals much about each other and what we are willing to contribute,” he noted.
United's comeback was remarkable, with Fernandes scoring a penalty in the 58th minute to initiate the turnaround. Cunha then scored twice in quick succession, sealing the victory for the hosts. However, Cunha received a second yellow card in stoppage time, leaving the pitch early. This win marked a memorable moment for Manchester United in European competition, while Roma lamented their failure to maintain their two-goal lead.
