Bob Carter Joins Cricket West Indies as Batting Consultant to Enhance Player Development

New Appointment to Boost Batting Standards

New Delhi, September 9: Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the hiring of seasoned New Zealand coach Bob Carter as its batting consultant. His one-year role is designed to elevate batting standards throughout the West Indies and fortify the regional coaching framework in anticipation of significant international competitions.

Carter officially began his tenure on September 1, 2026, and will be involved with CWI's men's, women's, and youth programs. His appointment is timely, as the West Indies prepare for the Men's ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier scheduled for February-March 2027, followed by preparations for the World Cup, according to the CWI website.

His initial task will involve a regional tour later this month, covering all six first-class territories: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Leeward Islands, and the Windward Islands. During this tour, he will engage directly with players and coaches.

Carter's focus will be on two primary objectives: offering specialized technical guidance to both elite and emerging batters, and enhancing the capabilities of regional and high-performance coaches to create effective individual batting programs.

He will collaborate closely with coaches to improve the support available to elite players returning to their home territories, while also working with CWI's High-Performance team to develop batting modules that can be integrated into the regional coaching pathway, ensuring accessibility for coaches at all levels.

“West Indies cricket has a rich history of producing exceptional batsmen, and my role is to help establish a foundation for future generations of world-class players,” Carter stated. “I am committed to supporting players and coaches in reaching their full potential and am eager to work with regional and high-performance coaches to achieve this goal.”

With over 30 years of elite coaching experience, Carter most recently held the position of High-Performance Coach with New Zealand Cricket from 2012 to 2025, where he was instrumental in player development, performance planning, and talent identification.

He has also served as Head Coach of the New Zealand Women’s team from 2019 to 2022 and has held the role of Men’s Assistant Coach on two occasions, in addition to previous head coaching positions with Canterbury and Wellington, and as Director of Cricket at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in England.

CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe emphasized that this appointment aims to enhance both the players and the regional coaching system. “West Indies teams will compete in at least six global events over the next 24-30 months, including the Men’s World Cup Qualifier next February. The actions we take now are intended to set the stage for future success. Bob’s immediate task is to elevate the technical standards as we approach these events,” Bascombe remarked. “However, the true measure of this appointment will be whether the coaches he collaborates with become more effective in teaching batting and whether this knowledge is integrated into the coaching education modules for the entire region. That is what will have a lasting impact,” he added.
