Glasgow [Scotland], July 27: Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi has added another medal to her Commonwealth Games achievements, securing a bronze in the women's 58kg category during the 2026 event held in Glasgow on Monday.

The 27-year-old athlete from Manipur showcased her skills in a highly competitive final, finishing behind Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who took home the gold with a record-setting total, and Canada's Ann Sophie Taschereau, who earned the silver medal, as reported by ESPN.

Bindyarani kicked off her competition with a strong start in the snatch segment. After her coaching team adjusted her opening lift from 85kg to 83kg, she executed it successfully. She then lifted 85kg on her second attempt and concluded the snatch with a successful 87kg lift, tying with England's Eliza Pratt but securing her position ahead based on countback.

As she moved into the clean and jerk phase, Bindyarani faced stiff competition. Her first attempt at 110kg was deemed a no-lift after a review indicated an elbow buckle during the jerk. Undeterred, she returned for her second attempt and successfully lifted 112kg, bringing her total to 199kg and placing her in silver medal contention at that moment.

In pursuit of a personal best, Bindyarani attempted 116kg but was unable to complete the lift. Nevertheless, her total of 199kg was sufficient to secure the bronze medal, while Lawal dominated the event with a Games record total of 229kg, and Taschereau finished with 215kg.

This medal marks Bindyarani's second podium finish at the Commonwealth Games, following her silver medal win in Birmingham in 2022. Her achievement is particularly noteworthy given her recovery from a knee injury in 2023 and her transition between weight categories, fluctuating between the 55kg and 58kg divisions.

With Bindyarani's bronze, India's medal tally has reached five, including one medal in para powerlifting. Overall, India has secured six medals at the Glasgow 2026 Games, comprising one gold, three silver, and two bronze.
