Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Long-Awaited Return

Dubai [UAE], October 7: Former Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma praised Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the national team after a four-year hiatus, emphasizing that the 36-year-old's unwavering dedication and consistency have finally paid off. He encouraged younger players to take inspiration from Bhuvneshwar's journey.

Bhuvneshwar's international career had been on pause since the T20 World Cup semi-final against England in 2022. Now, nearly four years later, he has been recalled to represent India in the upcoming five T20Is against New Zealand, starting October 22.

Known as the 'Swing King', Bhuvneshwar has participated in 229 matches across all formats, securing 294 wickets with an impressive average of 29.50, including seven five-wicket hauls. His recent performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has been remarkable, where he took 45 wickets in 31 matches at an average of 22.55, contributing to the franchise's consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026. In the latest IPL season, he was the second-highest wicket-taker, claiming 28 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 17.89 and an economy rate of 7.95.

In a conversation with a news outlet, Mohit expressed his joy over Bhuvneshwar's comeback, noting that despite challenges from emerging bowlers and injuries, Bhuvneshwar consistently performed for his state team and participated in various leagues, including the UPT20 League, where he was the fifth-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 11 matches. He also excelled in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking eight wickets in seven matches.

Mohit emphasized the importance of consistency in sports, stating, “Young players should understand that persistence is key. When you feel like your efforts are in vain, it's crucial to keep pushing. You must commit to giving your all, no matter the circumstances. Bhuvneshwar embodies this mindset. I’ve seen his dedication firsthand.”

He further explained that while not playing international cricket can affect a player's mindset, it’s essential to maintain discipline and consistency. “You have to rise each day and continue striving. Bhuvneshwar's hard work has yielded results, and I am confident he will excel now that he’s back,” Mohit added.

Mohit also discussed Jasprit Bumrah's readiness for the 2027 ODI World Cup, despite limited ODI appearances since the 2023 final. He dismissed concerns about Bumrah's lack of recent game time, calling him a 'luxury' for Indian cricket. Although Bumrah missed the ODIs against West Indies, he shone in the Asian Games, helping India secure a gold medal with two wickets in two matches.

“Bumrah is prepared for the 2027 World Cup. In all formats, he stands out as one of the best bowlers. Just like luxury clothing, he shouldn’t be overused. The more he plays, the better he performs. It’s crucial to allow him to play his game without undue pressure about missed series. His support team knows his body best, and we should appreciate having a bowler of his caliber,” he concluded.
