Bhuvneshwar Kumar Joins India Squad for Decisive T20I Against West Indies

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been called up to replace the injured Arshdeep Singh in India's T20I squad for the final match against the West Indies. With the series tied at 2-2, this match is crucial for both teams. Bhuvneshwar's return marks a significant moment as he hasn't played a T20I in four years. His experience and skills will be vital in countering the West Indies' formidable captain, Shai Hope, who leads the series in runs. The match will take place at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where Bhuvneshwar made his debut in 2012.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Return to the T20I Squad

On Friday, veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was included in India's lineup for the crucial fifth and final T20I against the West Indies, stepping in for Arshdeep Singh, who is dealing with a shoulder injury.

The decisive match, currently tied at 2-2, is set to take place at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.

According to a statement from the BCCI, "Bhuvneshwar Kumar was added to the squad following Arshdeep Singh's shoulder injury sustained during the fourth T20I against the West Indies on Wednesday in Hyderabad."

At 36 years old, Bhuvneshwar was initially selected for the T20 series against New Zealand, which begins on October 22 in Christchurch.

The decision regarding Arshdeep's availability for the final T20I will be made before the match, depending on his recovery progress.

However, it seems unlikely that the left-arm pacer will participate, as shoulder injuries typically require at least three weeks for recovery.

This situation paves the way for Bhuvneshwar's T20I return after a four-year hiatus, making him a strong candidate to play in the final match against the West Indies.

His last T20I appearance was against New Zealand in Napier on November 22, 2022.

Interestingly, Bhuvneshwar's comeback will occur at the same venue where he made his international debut in 2012 against Pakistan.

During that debut, he achieved impressive figures of 4-0-9-3, with his first wicket being Pakistan's opener Nasir Jamshed.

After a significant break from the national team, Bhuvneshwar reinvented himself as a T20I bowler during the IPL seasons of 2025 and 2026.

He took 45 wickets in 30 matches while playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru during that time.

RCB's assistant coach Omkar Salvi emphasized Bhuvneshwar's evolution as a skilled player in the T20 format.

"One of his greatest assets is his understanding of the game. He knows what suits him and keeps his approach straightforward," Salvi remarked.

"He has consistently adapted to the requirements of T20 cricket, whether it's generating opportunities with the new ball or utilizing his variations in the later stages of an innings," he added.

Bhuvneshwar's expertise with the new ball and his familiarity with Chinnaswamy Stadium will be crucial for India in countering the aggressive West Indian captain Shai Hope.

Hope currently leads the series with 261 runs from four matches, including two centuries.
