Arrest of Abhishek Porel

Abhishek Porel, a cricketer from Bengal who has previously played for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was taken into custody by police in the Hooghly district. This action followed a complaint from a medical student who accused him of engaging in sexual relations under the pretense of marriage, as confirmed by an official on Tuesday.

According to Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh, a case was filed against Porel, leading to a court-issued arrest warrant. He was apprehended late Monday night and is set to appear in court today.

The Mogra police arrested Porel late on Monday, and he is expected to be presented before a Chinsurah court later today.

This arrest follows a directive from the Calcutta High Court on July 20, which mandated police to detain the cricketer in relation to the case. The court also ordered the confiscation of his electronic devices to prevent the sharing of the complainant's photographs.

Law enforcement has charged Porel under Section 69 of the BNS, along with Sections 311 and 318, and other relevant provisions of the BNS, as well as Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act, according to police sources.

The complaint was filed by a young medical student from Karnataka at the Mogra police station on June 23. She alleged that she and Porel had been in a relationship for approximately three-and-a-half years and had intentions to marry.

The woman claimed they had traveled abroad together, but Porel later refuted their relationship, prompting her to seek police intervention.

According to her complaint, a dispute arose about a year and a half ago, escalating to the police station, although no formal complaint was made at that time.

Following her June complaint, police initiated an investigation and made several attempts to locate Porel at his residence in Chandannagar, but he was not found.

Afterward, the woman approached the Calcutta High Court, which led to the court's order for Porel's arrest on July 20. The court proceedings also included allegations of criminal intimidation and other offenses, in addition to the rape accusation.

Porel has previously denied the allegations against him.

As of now, responses from Porel and his family regarding his arrest are still pending.
