Ben Stokes Announces Retirement After Emotional Farewell

Nottingham [UK], June 30: England's captain Ben Stokes has shared that his decision to retire from international cricket was a thoughtful and personal choice, made only after exploring all options to continue playing.

Stokes expressed a desire to extend his career beyond this week but ultimately recognized that it was not meant to be.

In the third Test at Trent Bridge, New Zealand, led by Tom Latham, triumphed over England by 160 runs, clinching the series 2-1 on Monday.

This match also signified the conclusion of Stokes' international journey, marking his first home series defeat as both a player and captain.

Looking back on his career, Stokes conveyed immense pride in his accomplishments and gratitude for the joy he brought to England's fans globally. While he will miss donning the Three Lions jersey, he acknowledged that there are elements of the game he is relieved to leave behind as he wraps up this extraordinary chapter.

"At the end of the day, I know there will be questions. I’m sure some people have them, and I hope my decision can be respected. The most crucial person in making this choice is me. I didn’t rush into it; I consulted trusted individuals about these personal matters. I tried throughout this week to envision continuing, but it wasn’t meant to be. I’m proud of my career and the happiness I’ve brought to fans who support us worldwide," Stokes remarked after the match.

This match also marked a disappointing conclusion to Stokes' captaincy, which had begun with a 3-0 victory over New Zealand at home in 2022.

However, this time, New Zealand reversed the outcome with a 2-1 series victory, overshadowing Stokes' farewell. The result also ended England's long-standing unbeaten streak at home in series of three or more Tests, a record that had stood since 2012.
