Ben Stokes' Surprising Retirement Announcement

On June 28, Ben Stokes shocked the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from international cricket. The renowned all-rounder had recently made a comeback to the Test squad for the third match against New Zealand. However, following a nightclub incident, both he and Gus Atkinson were left out of the second Test. Stokes is widely regarded as one of the finest all-rounders in the game and has been a sought-after player in the IPL. His popularity was such that he earned a higher salary than MS Dhoni during their time together on the same team.

Stokes first entered the IPL auction in 2017, where the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) acquired him for a staggering Rs 14.50 crore. In comparison, Dhoni was signed for Rs 12.50 crore in the pre-IPL 2016 draft. Under the captaincy of Steve Smith, RPS reached the IPL 2017 final, but Stokes had returned to England and missed the match, where RPS narrowly lost to the Mumbai Indians by just one run. In the IPL 2018 mega-auction, Stokes joined the Rajasthan Royals for Rs 12.50 crore, while Dhoni returned to CSK for Rs 15 crore.

Ben Stokes became MS Dhoni's teammate again

In IPL 2023, Stokes reunited with Dhoni as he was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for a remarkable Rs 16.25 crore, making him the highest-paid player on the team, while Dhoni was retained for Rs 12 crore. Unfortunately, Stokes' season was cut short due to injury, limiting him to just two matches. Despite his absence, Dhoni led CSK to victory against the Gujarat Titans in a thrilling final, securing the trophy for the fifth time. With Stokes now retired from international cricket, it remains to be seen if he will participate in future IPL seasons. According to IPL regulations, he can only return if he enters the IPL 2028 mega-auction.
